Jewish Community Briefed by Top White House Staff

Ahead of this afternoon’s reception celebrating Jewish American Heritage Month, the White House this morning briefed Jewish leaders and activists from across the country about key issues facing the community and the country as a whole.

The briefing included:

- Dan Shapiro, the Senior Director for Middle East & North Africa at the National Security Council (and the President’s nominee to serve as the U.S. Ambassador to Israel, pending Senate confirmation), spoke at length about this Administration’s commitment to an ever-strengthening U.S.-Israel relationship. Shapiro reviewed events in the Middle East, discussed the Administration’s unshakeable commitment to Israel’s security and took questions.

- Jon Carson, Deputy Assistant to the President and the Director of the Office of Public Engagement, spoke at length about how leaders and American Jews from around the country can help participate in the President’s agenda and work with federal agencies to help move the country forward.

- David Simas, Deputy Assistant to the President for Special Projects working in the Office of Communications, discussed how the Administration shares the complex message of the Obama Administration’s agenda in a simple and direct way; in so doing, he also reviewed some key policy benchmarks of this Administration in the process.

- Brian Deese, Special Assistant to the President and Deputy Director of the National Security Council, discussed the complex economic challenges facing the country when President Barack Obama first took office. Deese also reviewed the economic strides we have made since that time, and the distance we still have to cover. Deese examined the dire potential consequences to Medicare and other vital programs if the House Republican budget plan moves forward, and like the other speakers, he fielded a range of questions.

- Danielle Borrin, Associate Director of the Office of Public Engagement and a Special Assistant in the Office of the Vice President, reviewed a range of special Jewish community outreach efforts being undertaken by the Obama Administration.

This briefing—like the Jewish American Heritage Month celebration this afternoon—is yet another example of the unique and committed Jewish community outreach being conducted by the Administration.
