Ira N. Forman, CEO of the National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC), released the following statement today:
NJDC welcomes President Barack Obama’s selection of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to fill the U.S. Supreme Court vacancy. With the selection of Sotomayor, Obama has shown sound judgment and profound respect for our nation’s highest court by selecting an individual who has strong credentials, is highly regarded, and is committed to our constitutional values, rights, and liberties.
We are also proud of Obama’s commitment to have the Supreme Court reflect America’s rich and diverse population, by selecting the first Hispanic justice. More importantly, the President’s nominee has the intellectual capacity and real world experience to be a world class justice.
We applaud this selection and expect the nomination of Sotomayor to receive Senate confirmation in a timely manner.
Great Choice!
President Obama has nominated a wise
individual as a Justice to the U. S. Supreme
Court.
It is time that U. S. Senators, from both
political parties, confirm this selection.
From every indication, the selection of Judge Sonia Sotomayor was an excellent choice by President Obama. Well done!
If it couldn’t be our “Judge Judy”-than Mazel-Tov to Judge Sonia!
yes this looks to be a “fair” move ..pluses on many fronts..
I’m from the Bronx. So, what do you think I’d think of this nomination? It’s a great day for the Bronx!!!
Let’s wait & see= a “flaming liberal”... she ain’t.
I think the President made a great choice on many levels. What a pleasure to listen to his announcement and to her remarks.
I think it is a wonderful, wise decision by our Beloved President Obama. FINALLY!!! Maybe, just maybe the words of our constitituion will Really Ring True—- “with Freedom and Justice for ALL.” May G-d continue to protect, bless, and lead our
G-d-sent President Obama. Betty Reisman
Since she is Catholic, what are her views on women’s privacy rights when it comes to terminating a pregnancy?
As a lifelong liberal Democrat, I am extremely disappointed by the President’s nomination of Judge Sotomayor. We know from sad (and recent) experience that George W. Bush catered to his right wing base by appointing two justices who are guaranteed votes for the extreme right in every case.
But our current President, who apparently fancies himself as the Conciliator-in-Chief, has just nominated the least liberal of the candidates who remained on his “short list.” In defending the President’s selection, Senator Schumer said, “She is a moderate, not a liberal. And she has consistently voted in favor of the government and against the rights of criminal defendants.” [Apparently, she also voted to against funding for overseas abortions.] On top of this, she is known as a “bit of a bully” in the courtroom and for being very hard on the lawyers who appear before her.
We have a court that is right now composed of four right wing extremists and one justice who is very conservative, albeit not an extremist. The court hangs in such a delicate balance that we must be assured that the Scalia wing does not garner a 5th vote on any major issue. Judge Sotomayor fails to inspire confidence that she will be the bulwark against right wing extremism that Justice Souter was (as he was also the court’s conscience).
Just one person’s opinion.

first class choice -excellent
Fantstic choice. Republicans will attack this nominee and shoot themselves in the foot once again with most Americans and minorities. Conservataives are truly brain dead and on the wrong side of history.
Excellent choice!
Wonderful pick. The Supreme court should reflect the US population which is 50% women and multiple minorities. The imbalance seems to be an overload of catholics which only bothers me because the church is meddling in the political process to a close to illegal degree.
As a mid-western WASP male Republican, i whole heartedly agree with President Obama’s choice.
OVER HALF of Judge Sotomayor’s decisions as a Circuit Court judge that have come up for review have been STRUCK DOWN by the United States Supreme Court.
If they say this woman is wrong over 1/2 the time, HOW CAN WE SAY SHE IS RIGHT???
Four years ago at Duke Law School, Judge Sotomayor stated that the court “is where policy is made!” Then -“I know this is on tape and I should never say that, because we don’t ‘make law,’ I know, I know.”
Does she, indeed do we, understand there are 3 branches of government for a reason?
Even Washington Post columnist Richard Cohen expressed shock and disappointment at her recent approval in Ricci v. DeStefano of the city of New Haven’s racial quota system and its decision to deny 18 firefighters their earned promotions—based on their skin color. Her own colleague, Judge Jose Cabranes (a fellow Clinton appointee) objected to the panel’s opinion that contained “no reference whatsoever to the constitutional issues at the core of this case.”
President Obama has stated that he wanted his pick for the highest court in the land to have “empathy” and not someone who’s about some “abstract legal theory.”
But isn’t that what the SCOTUS is all about? The law?
Judges are to be impartial - or they used to be… This woman has an agenda and decides based upon that instead of strictly interpreting the Constitution to cases which have come before her.
It sounds to me as if his nomination is pandering to racial divisions and trying to usurp Congress’ Constitutional authority.
This is not what the Supreme Court is all about is it? Indeed, not what we are about… Can’t we get past race already?
It seems to me that Mr. Forman should review Judge Sotomayor’s RECORD before stating she is “committed to our constitutional values, rights and liberties”.
Tell that to those firefighters. Indeed, tell it to the others in the cases that the very court to which she hopes to be appointed has overturned.
The selection of Justice Sonia Sotomayer is the ideal candidatw who came from humble beginnings. Her intellectual breadth, compassion and her her steadfast of America ideals deserves bipartisan support.
The choice is great. Let justice prevail now and in future for our freedom.
I like her. I like that she is female and hispanic. But we really don’t know al ot about her philosophical positions. I do need to hear her views on separation of church and state before I feel really excited about her.
Regretfully, I am in Utah. Orrin Hatch dors not like Ms. Sotomayor. That is a very good reason to like her.
I think its a good choice but I like to know a little bit more about her
Excellent Choice.
I am very pleased with President Obama’s decision. He chose someone with the credentials for which he decided prior to her selection. When I look at her, I get a very good feeling in my soul. She is more than expected. As far as I am concerned, she has it all and will benefit us ALL! Thank for this opportunity.
As a Liberal, I am again disappointed with President Obama for taking the “safe” route, rather than doing what he promised for those of us who worked so hard to get him elected.
It will be too late by the time we know if Sotomayer was a good choice or not. We won’t know until she actually makes decisions. However, I will pronounce her name as it should be. I can’t believe the Conservatives are making an issue about this!
Like “Ned Aronoff”, I too am a Jew in the wilderness of Utah. However, just that Hatch doesn’t like her doesn’t mean she’s the best person. And just because she’s a woman and Hispanic, doesn’t mean she’s the best person.
I know President Obama spoke of empathy; empathy won’t help anyone if she votes against Liberal interests.
So disappointed!! I am so sorry to learn that re-election and not the American people are what really motivates our president.
A diverse Supreme Court will finally come to pass in this country if Mrs. Sotomayer is selected.
It’s time that this country start thinking in terms of the 21st. century.
As a user I would like to give my humble thanks for your contributions and hope that the personal reasons are of the good

Shouldn’t we wait to hear what she says in her hearing to understand her views before we progressives celebrate her nomination? Let’s wait to she where she stands on the ISSUES.
