Senator Ron Wyden has been a strong and independent voice in the Senate since 1996. He has been a leading voice on health care reform, authoring the first federal law to protect seniors from Medicare Insurance scams and proposing the first major bi-partisan health care reform legislation in more than a decade, the Healthy Americans Act. The Healthy Americans Act would cut health care costs and ensure affordable health care coverage for every American. Wyden has also been a strong voice on reproductive rights receiving a 100% rating from NARAL, and civil liberties, and was one of only 14 Senators to vote against the Defense of Marriage Act. He has consistently voted to prevent job discrimination and hate crimes, and the right to privacy, and was one of only 10 Senators to vote against renewing the Patriot Act. He has opposed the war in Iraq since the beginning and has continued to fight its escalation. He currently serves on the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, Finance Committee, Budget Committee, Select Committee on Intelligence and Special Committee on Aging. Wyden serves as an honorary chairman of the National Jewish Democratic Council. He lives in Portland with his wife Nancy and has two sons and two daughters.
