WASHINGTON, DC- The National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC) today lauded President Barack Obama’s defense of Israel and his rebuke of the Palestinians’ threatened unilateral declaration of independence during his address to the United Nations. NJDC Chair Marc R. Stanley and President and CEO David A. Harris jointly issued the following statement:

“On behalf of the National Jewish Democratic Council’s Board of Directors and leadership, we wish to express our thanks to President Barack Obama for passionately and eloquently standing up for Israel and the Jewish State’s security needs at the United Nations today. In clearly rebuking Palestinian efforts to declare statehood unilaterally through the UN, President Obama could not have made it clearer that he stands with Israel. He communicated to the world—in front of the world’s leaders—that he personally understands and empathizes with all Israelis who have experienced violence and uncertainty. For that and his consistent work to bolster Israel’s peace and security, he has distinguished himself as Israel’s strongest advocate on the international stage.

This morning President Obama reiterated the position that only direct negotiations—not resolutions from the United Nations—will lead to peace between Israel and her neighbors. He did so by restating America’s consistent position that any peace agreement must account for Israel’s security needs.

President Obama’s remarks this morning should put to bed once and for all the political chatter about the President’s commitment to Israel. As he has proven throughout his presidency, President Obama supports Israel and its people instinctively. Israel truly has no better friend in the world today.”
