Washington, D.C. – Following an overwhelming 93-5 vote by the U.S. Senate today, Ashton Carter was officially confirmed today as the new U.S. Secretary of Defense. The National Jewish Democratic Council applauded the vote today, stating that Carter is the right man to lead the United States’ defense efforts at this tumultuous time.
Greg Rosenbaum, Chair of the NJDC Board of Directors, stated,
“Knowing Ashton Carter from his time at the Harvard Kennedy School, I am confident that this is the right man for the job. His remarkable understanding of nuclear proliferation issues makes him uniquely qualified in the ongoing effort to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, and Israeli leaders will be pleased to find they have another stalwart friend joining the administration. It is clear from this overwhelmingly bipartisan vote that leaders on both sides of the aisle agree that Ash’s credentials are impeccable, and we congratulate him on this tremendous day. We look forward to working with him in the months and years to come as he works alongside President Obama to strengthen the U.S.-Israel relationship and to lead our brave men and women in service.”
