WASHINGTON, DC - Ira N. Forman, Executive Director of the National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC), released the following statement:
As our country is confronted with severe economic problems, we must act responsibly and quickly to enact an economic stimulus and recovery plan that is as courageous as the challenges we face.
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is more than just an economic stimulus plan. The plan will create well-paying jobs, cut taxes for working families, and make responsible investments in our future. The plan will invest in our most important priorities including energy independence, education, health care, and rebuilding and retrofitting infrastructure to meet the demands of the 21st century.
The plan will include unprecedented measures to guarantee transparency and accountability to ensure all taxpayer money is spent wisely. With the creation of www.recovery.gov, we will be able to see how our tax dollars are spent with an oversight board updating the site as part of an unprecedented effort to root out government waste and inefficiency.
While the Senate works to improve the final version of this plan, the overall mission is clear: strengthen our economy now, and invest in our nation over the long term.
By working together in a bipartisan and urgent fashion, we can begin to move beyond the short-sighted policies that brought us here and begin to turn around this economy. Yet, Republicans have had a knee jerk reaction to sideline this important and necessary legislation.
NJDC is urging our activists to contact their Senators to tell them that it is time to fix our economy by supporting the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. It is critical that Senators hear from their constituents. Now is time for the Senate to put party politics aside and pass a plan that will move America forward.
