Forman: “This untruthful and slimy line of attack on Shulman says more about Garrettt’s desperation than anything about Shulman.”

WASHINGTON, DC – In a campaign season notable for nasty Republican smears, the National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC) is disturbed about Representative Scott Garrettt’s (R-NJ) increasingly nasty campaign against Rabbi Dennis Shulman for New Jersey’s fifth Congressional District.

“As Garrettt sees his incumbency seriously challenged by Shulman, his ads gets nastier,” said Ira N. Forman, Executive Director of NJDC. “This untruthful and slimy line of attack on Shulman says more about Garrettt’s desperation than anything about Shulman.”

Garrettt’s recent direct mail piece and television ad are just his latest attempt to smear Shulman. Garrettt’s direct mail pieces pose the question, “Should we be talking with terrorists? Dennis Shulman thinks so.” This smear is superimposed over a menacing image of armed Hamas terrorists. The back of the mailer reads, “Shulman is an extremist who believes America must negotiate with terrorists.”

Like Garrettt’s direct mail, the campaign’s television ad works to paint Shulman as an extremist who is sympathetic to terrorists. The ad asks, “What do we really know about Dennis Shulman, the man who is smearing Scott Garrettt?” A scary and menacing voice then warns, “Shulman is an extremist who believes America must negotiate with terrorists.”

“There is no other reason for this type of messaging except to try to exploit Jewish fears about the security of Israel,” said Ira N. Forman, Executive Director of NJDC. “It is simply not a credible argument to Jewish voters that Shulman, who has a strong policy and deep passion for Israel, would advocate negotiating with Hamas terrorists.”
