Stanley: Obama, in his inaugural speech and actions during his first two days in office, has already made the Middle East a chief concern of his administration.
WASHINGTON, DC - Marc R. Stanley, Chairman of the National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC), released the following statement:
The National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC) commends President Barack Obama for his active and immediate commitment to keep Hamas from rearmament and to ensure the success of the recent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
Obama, in his inaugural speech and actions during his first two days in office, has already made the Middle East a chief concern of his administration. This serious commitment is shown by today’s appointment of former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell as Obama’s special envoy for the Middle East and the President’s conversations with top Middle East leaders on his first day in the oval office.
Mitchell has a strong record of support for Israel’s security and we join Israeli Ambassador Sallai Meridor in warmly welcoming this appointment.
