WASHINGTON, DC - Marc R. Stanley, Chairman of the National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC), and Ira N. Forman, Executive Director of NJDC, release the following statement:

By selecting Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY), President-elect Barack Obama will be nominating a Secretary of State who is ready and prepared to engage the international community. This selection sends a clear message that the Obama administration wants to improve the international standing of the United States.

A strong Secretary of State is extremely important to the new administration's ability to work towards stability and peace in the Middle East. In Clinton, the President-elect has a strong effective leader who will be able to implement the administration's foreign policy initiatives.

Obama also chose other senior members of his National Security and Foreign Policy team this morning, including Robert Gates, Secretary of Defense; General James Jones, National Security Adviser; Governor Janet Napolitano (D-AZ), Secretary of Homeland Security; and Susan Rice, Ambassador to the United Nations. This National Security and Foreign Policy team shows that the new administration will have the experience and the diversity to ensure the President-elect remains fully informed on the policy options and solutions to today's foreign policy challenges.
