WASHINGTON, DC - Marc R. Stanley, Chairman of the National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC), and Ira N. Forman, Executive Director of NJDC, released the following statement:

President-elect Barack Obama formed a terrific Green Team to address the problem of global warming and move America towards energy independence. This team reflects a deep experience and an unsurpassed expertise in the environmental, energy, and climate challenges facing America today.

Obama's selections include Steven Chu, a Nobel-prize winning physicist, as Energy Secretary; Carol Browner, America's longest serving Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator during the Clinton years, to head the White House council on Energy and Climate; and Lisa Jackson, former head of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, to be the Administrator of the EPA.

Issues such as energy independence and global warming not only represent our country's environmental concerns but also represent top national security and foreign policy challenges. With this new team, it is clear that the Obama administration will emphasize science and understand the urgency needed to address these difficult issues from day one.
