Washington, D.C.  – Missouri Secretary of State Jason Kander, a Jewish American, announced today that he will challenge Sen. Roy Blunt in next November’s elections, giving Missouri voters a strong, progressive candidate that will stand up for their values and priorities. The National Jewish Democratic Council applauded Sec. Kander’s entry into the race, praising his background as an army veteran who served in Afghanistan and as a bipartisan leader in Jefferson City.

Greg Rosenbaum, Chair of the NJDC Board of Directors, stated,

“Sec. Kander is an honorable and good man, and just the type of person we need in the United States Senate. Having served in Afghanistan, Sec. Kander understands firsthand some of the most complex issues facing our nation today. His  past work with members on both sides of the aisle in Missouri has led to stronger protection for survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse, expanded health care coverage for children, and a more open and accessible government. We are thankful that he has always made it a point to prioritize the members of our armed forces, as well as veterans and their families, and hope to see him continue this, and his other exemplary work, on the national stage. We look forward to working with Sec. Kander and his wife Diana in the weeks and months to come as we push towards returning the Senate to Democratic control in 2016.”

Sec. Kander, a native of Kansas City, MO, served as a military intelligence officer in Afghanistan before being elected to the Missouri House of Representatives in 2008. In 2012, he became the youngest statewide elected official in the country when he was elected as Missouri’s Secretary of State. Every Democratic statewide official in Missouri has endorsed Sec. Kander for Senate, including Gov. Jay Nixon and Sen. Claire McCaskill. In addition, Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Chairman Sen. Jon Tester issued a statement today supporting Sec. Kander’s campaign.
