WASHINGTON, DC - Ira N. Forman, Executive Director of the National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC), released the following statement:

NJDC applauds the positive steps that the Obama administration and Israel took this week toward Middle East peace. We are pleased that yesterday President Barack Obama and Israeli President Shimon Peres agreed that negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians should begin right away and that Iran’s nuclear program is a top priority. Yesterday’s initial discussions will set the groundwork for Obama’s meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later this month.

The Obama administration has made it abundantly clear that it will not sit on the sidelines as Israel’s security is threatened by Iran or by terrorists on its borders. We are pleased that President is using America’s renewed international credibility and national might to combat the dangers the U.S. and Israel face in the Middle East.

The successful meeting between Peres and Obama is only the latest indication that the U.S. and Israeli governments plan to work closely together to combat challenges faced in the Middle East. Obama’s direct engagement on this issue since his first day in office, coupled with Vice President Joe Biden’s well thought out speech to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) earlier this week, are just the latest examples of the Obama administration’s commitment to be actively involved in ensuring Israel’s long term peace and security.

NJDC congratulates the administration for taking these steps toward peace by the U.S. and Israel and looks forward to the meeting between Netanyahu and Obama later this month.
