WASHINGTON, DC - National Jewish Democratic Council Chairman Marc R. Stanley and President and CEO David A. Harris today jointly issued the following statement regarding President Barack Obama’s address at the United Nations:

Yesterday President Obama dedicated fully one-fourth of his remarks to the United Nations General Assembly on Israel and the Middle East peace process, reflecting his tremendous focus on achieving peace while ensuring Israel’s lasting security.

Simply put, the President’s comments in front of an international body on behalf of Israel’s legitimacy and the need to normalize relations with Israel were as strong and clarion a statement as any leader could make. Obama’s remarks - and his decisive actions over the past year - have left no doubt that he will do everything in his power to move the peace process forward while ensuring Israel’s security.

We applaud his unwavering commitment to achieving peace through a negotiated two-state solution, while also preserving Israel’s sovereignty and security. As the President forcefully stated, ‘It should be clear to all that efforts to chip away at Israel’s legitimacy will only be met by the unshakeable opposition of the United States.’ Such powerful language - including describing Israel as the ‘historic homeland of the Jewish people’ - is particularly important and remarkable in a hall that has become infamous for its disproportionate vilification of the Jewish State, and for the repeated efforts by member states to question Israel’s legitimacy in the community of nations.

It is our hope that world leaders will heed the President’s call and work together to support efforts to negotiate a peaceful resolution, while normalizing ties with Israel.
