NJDC Calls Republican Attempt to Politicize Israel in New York Special Election "Desperate" and "Shameful"

New York, NY - The National Jewish Democratic Council's New York Director Marcia Dickstein Sudolsky issued the following statement today blasting New York State Senate Candidate Maureen O'Connell's recent attempt to politicize the U.S.-Israel relationship:

"NJDC is deeply disappointed by Maureen O'Connell's most recent direct mail piece attempting to politicize the U.S.-Israel relationship while suggesting that New Yorkers will be safer with her in the State Senate. It is one thing to express your solidarity with Israel. It is egotistical at best, however, to suggest that Israel's continued existence hinges on O'Connell's defeat of Craig Johnson, a committed Jewish community activist.

"At a time when the American Jewish community - regardless of political affiliation - stands united behind Israel, Maureen O'Connell is making an eleventh hour attempt to use the Jewish state as a political wedge issue. It is both desperate and shameful. Even more, it comes right out of the Republican National Committee's 2006 playbook - from a game that they overwhelmingly lost just a few short months ago.

"Shame on Maureen O'Connell for trying to use Israel as a political wedge issue. And shame on those who think that this is way to win over Jewish voters."
