Washington, DC: The National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC) today extended its congratulations to Israel's newly elected Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon. "We extend our best wishes to Prime Minister-elect Sharon, and we want Mr. Sharon to know that we at the National Jewish Democratic Council are firmly committed to continually striving to preserve the longstanding friendship and strategic military alliance between the United States and Israel. We look forward to working with him and his administration as Israel continues its quest for a safe and secure peace," said NJDC National Chairman William B. Dockser.

"Once again, Israel has shown that she is alone among the Middle Eastern nations that shares America's democratic ideal. Israel's new leader was chosen at the ballot boxes, not through violence or seizure of power, as is the norm all too often around the Middle East and the rest of the world. The peaceful transition of power - whether it takes place in the United States or Israel - must always be recognized as the miracle that it is, especially when viewed against the backdrop of world history. In the context of the many repressive regimes of the Middle East, Israel's quiet and democratic elections stand out as a sharp contrast. This democratic commonality between the United States and Israel alone should remind all Americans that Israel is our most reliable ally in the region, and that she is deserving of our longstanding friendship and strategic cooperation.

"Mr. Sharon has some difficult challenges ahead of him, in both domestic and diplomatic affairs. But we are confident that he will provide the leadership necessary to steer Israel through these uncertain times. We at the NJDC pledge our full cooperation in working to uphold the uniquely close relationship between America and Israel, our strongest and sole democratic ally in the Middle East."
