Washington, DC: National Jewish Democratic Council Executive Director Ira N. Forman issued the following statement today on behalf of NJDC, regarding the passing this week of former Illinois Senator Paul Simon:

All of us here at NJDC mourn the loss of a truly great American former United States Senator Paul Simon. This week we lost not just a great American but a great and deeply committed friend of Israel. Though many in the Jewish community may remember him as the Congressman who took on and defeated Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Charles Percy, those who came into contact with him both Democrats and Republicans alike could not help but be drawn to his integrity and decency.

NJDC Deputy Executive Director David A. Harris, who worked for Senator Simon in 1993 on the Foreign Relations and Judiciary committees, added:

Many of us at NJDC had the profound good fortune to work closely with him, and we have been touched and moved by his deep concern for those in need; his reverence for his constituents in Illinois; and, above all else, his lasting determination to always do what is right, regardless of the politics involved. Senator Simon will be sorely missed.
