Washington, DC: NJDC National Chairman William B. Dockser today issued the following statement:

"NJDC is shocked and profoundly saddened by the loss of Senator Paul Wellstone, his wife Sheila, and one of his children, Marcia, who died along with two pilots and members of the Senator's campaign staff when his plane tragically crashed earlier today in Minnesota.
"Senator Wellstone was first and foremost a mensch - in the fullest sense of the word. His deep commitment to helping people and fighting for the underdog was informed directly by his Jewish understanding of tikkun olam - literally 'repairing the world.' All of his political and policy struggles - whether in the areas of foreign policy, human rights, or policies affecting the underserved - revolved around his commitment to helping people and positively affecting the lives of as many people as possible.

"Senator Wellstone was a genuine friend of the NJDC and a supporter of our mission. We firmly believe that the best way to honor his memory is to rededicate ourselves to the very principle that Senator Wellstone fought tirelessly for - the principle of tikkun olam.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Senator's extended family and staff, as well as the people of Minnesota, at this very difficult moment."
