Washington, DC: The National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC) today questioned the propriety of members of the U.S. House of Representatives visiting Iraq at this time.

In the wake of the trip by Congressmen David Bonior (D-MI), Jim McDermott (D-WA) and Mike Thompson (D-CA), NJDC Executive Director Ira N. Forman stated, "This trip to Baghdad was ill-advised. No matter how one stands on the need for regime change, it is very difficult to visit Iraq while not being used by the regime of Saddam Hussein."

Mr. Forman added, "It is also very problematic to treat Iraqi promises with any degree of legitimacy."
