Washington, DC - David A. Harris, President of the National Jewish Democratic Council issued the following statement praising a letter written by President Barack Obama regarding U.S. - Israel relations and remarks given by National Security Advisor Gen. James L. Jones at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy last night:

In the last 24 hours, both President Barack Obama and National Security Advisor Gen. James L. Jones made the administration’s foreign policy agenda explicitly clear. Iran will not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons, and Israel has been, and always will be, among our closet allies.

Last night Jones delivered powerful remarks about President Obama’s foreign policy plans. He touched both on the administration’s approach to dealing with Iran and the importance of the unique bond the U.S. and Israel share.

He dispelled any concerns about the U.S. position toward Iran, should they fail to live up to their international obligations - saying ‘the United States is determined to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.’ We applaud this strong commitment to protecting both our national security and the stability of the Middle East, as well as the welfare of the people of Israel.

Jones also clearly reiterated that the United States would not tolerate attempts to diminish Israel’s safety and security. He stated that ‘the United States will never waiver in defense of Israel’s security,’ and that ‘America’s commitment to Israel will endure.’

President Obama echoed this in a letter to Alan Solow, chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations. Obama could not have been any more clear when he wrote, ‘As we continue to strive for lasting peace agreements between Israel, the Palestinians, and Israel’s neighbors, all sides should understand that our commitment to Israel’s security is unshakeable and that no wedge will be driven between us. We will have our differences, but when we do, we will work to resolve them as close allies.’

The bond between the United States and Israel is one that will stand the test of time. It is a unique relationship that is being supported by this administration’s efforts to bridge the divide between Israelis and Palestinians. We encourage our friends in the Jewish community to take note of the sentiment expressed by both the President and Jones.

President Obama will not falter when it comes to defending our security or the security of our Jewish homeland.
