WASHINGTON, DC- The National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC) lauded President Barack Obama’s speech to the United Nations General Assembly this morning. NJDC Chair Marc R. Stanley and President & CEO David A. Harris said:

“Today’s speech by President Barack Obama could not have made it any clearer that the United States under President Obama’s leadership is squarely committed to preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, and that he echoes Jewish values and concerns on the world stage.

“Standing in front of the gathered leaders of the world, the President said—in a clarion call—that the United States under his watch will not permit a nuclear Iran. As the President rightly and forcefully noted, ‘Make no mistake: A nuclear-armed Iran is not a challenge that can be contained. It would threaten the elimination of Israel, the security of gulf nations, and the stability of the global economy. ...And that’s why the United States will do what we must to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.’

“The President’s UN address was yet another demonstration of the values he shares deeply with the American Jewish community. From active engagement in the world around us to actively promoting a two-state solution between Israelis and Palestinians; from encouraging condemnation of Holocaust-deniers to his eloquent explanation of America’s constitutional free speech protections; from his call to reject those who themselves ‘reject the right of Israel to exist’ to his assertion that ‘It is time to marginalize those’ who use ‘Israel as a central principle of politics’—President Obama echoes Jewish concerns and values.

“Today, we owe the President of the United States a similarly clarion ‘thank you’ for outlining his policies as clearly as he did at the United Nations today, particularly including his commitment that he and the United States simply will not permit Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon.”
