Our Democratic Party Leaders Condemn Barbarism of Anti-Israel Terror

Listed in: Israel, NJDC News, Press Releases

Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (SD), responding to Bob Novak on CNN's Crossfire: "...We've had six terrorist attacks in six days. What would you do if that was New York, Washington, Chicago and Dallas? I don't think we'd do anything differently. I don't know that the Israeli government has any choice but to be as aggressive as they are. They're responding as we would. I don't think there would be any doubt. Bob Novak himself would be calling for the same kind of retaliatory attacks were we to see that in this country and you know that." [CNN "Crossfire," April 1, 2002]

House Democratic Leader Richard Gephardt (MO): "As we work with the parties to end the violence in the region, we must do everything possible to assist Israel in preventing further terrorist attacks against its people. Together, we must undertake effective measures that will enhance the security of our closest ally in the region. We must also impress upon the Palestinian Authority and others the absolute need to turn unequivocally against terrorism. Chairman Arafat has had many opportunities to demonstrate a true commitment to peace. He has not yet done so, and the consequences have been devastating for Israelis and Palestinians alike. Terrorism must not be supported, condoned, or rewarded as we seek a resolution to this conflict and a dialogue toward peace." [Statement, April 4, 2002]

Senator Joseph Lieberman (CT): "I believe strongly we should not ask Israelis to stop their war against terrorists until they have achieved greater homeland security." [Reuters, April 4, 2002]

Senator Joseph Biden (DE): The United States should "put Arafat in a position where if he does not respond, he ends up literally losing his legitimacy in the Arab world." [CBS "Face the Nation," March 31, 2002]

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (NY): "Israel has a right to defend itself against this constant barrage of horrendous terrorist attacks.... Yasser Arafat is to blame for the violence and his failure as a leader." [New York Post, March 30, 2002]
