WASHINGTON, DC - Marc R. Stanley, Chairman of the National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC), released the following statement:

The National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC) applauds the passage of the fiscal year 2010 budget. This places us one step closer to realizing the priorities of President Barack Obama and recovering from the current economic crisis.

The President and Democrats in the Senate and House have shown strong leadership in shepherding the passage of this important legislation at this critical time. This budget is appropriately comprehensive in its approach to the challenges we face today. It emphasizes the importance of improving healthcare and education, the necessity of reducing our dependence on foreign oil, and providing tax relief to middle class families.

Last night’s vote moves us forward, but there is still a lot of work to undo the damage of past flawed economic policies and reduce the massive deficit inherited by the Obama administration.

Sadly, despite the state of our economy, this budget passed without a single Republican vote. In a time when American families are being hit hard by the economic downturn, GOP leaders should stop accusing Democrats of overreacting to the economic crisis and do more to be part of the solution.

NJDC urges a quick and responsible effort to agree on a final version of the budget in order to implement these funding priorities as soon as possible.
