WASHINGTON, DC - Ira N. Forman, Executive Director of the National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC), released the following statement:

The National Jewish Democratic Council praises the Senate for the passage of the District of Columbia House Voting Rights Act of 2009 that grants voting rights to residents of Washington, DC. This is a historic step toward undoing a grave injustice and brings the nearly 600,000 citizens in Washington, DC closer to representation in the House of Representatives.

Despite the efforts of most Republican senators and their leadership to curtail this legislation, this bill passed in the Senate by a margin of 61 to 37.

We now urge the House of Representatives to move forward and pass this critical legislation which President Barack Obama has pledged to sign into law. It is time to reverse more than two centuries of injustice for the citizens of Washington, DC.
