WASHINGTON, DC - Ira N. Forman, Executive Director of the National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC), released the following statement:

The National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC) applauds Justice David Souter’s nearly two decades of service on the Supreme Court of the United States. Throughout Souter’s career, he has shown independence and a profound respect for the constitution and the integrity of the institution he served. Among other notable decisions, it was Souter’s vote that preserved the fundamental right protected in Roe v Wade.

With Souter’s retirement from the Supreme Court, President Barack Obama will have an extraordinary opportunity to have a profound impact on his legacy at the beginning of his presidency. We should remember that Souter’s impact on our nation’s laws has long outlasted the tenure of President George H. W. Bush by whom he was appointed.

NJDC is confident that Obama will nominate a fair-minded justice to the Supreme Court who is committed to constitutional values and protecting the rights and liberties enshrined therein.
