Déjà vu all over again as Jewish Republicans predict gains and election results prove otherwise
Tonight, Democrat Ted Deutch, a state Senator from Boca Raton, won an overwhelming victory against his Republican opponent in Florida’s 19th congressional district. Florida 19 is the most heavily Jewish district in the country. Deutch’s win demonstrates that the Jewish community continues to support and vote for Democrats.
National Jewish Democratic Council CEO, Ira N. Forman, issued the following statement in response to the special election results:
Ted Deutch’s victory is not only a testament to his record and campaign but it is also an indication that American Jewish voters remain an overwhelmingly Democratic constituency. President Obama took about 65% of the vote in FL 19 in 2008 and tonight Ted appears to have taken 63% in a relatively low turnout special election.
For the last eight election cycles Republican Jews have predicted gains among Jewish voters and for the last eight cycles, election results proved them wrong. Just this week they made the same claims for 2010 and just tonight the Deutch victory in this most Jewish congressional district proves them wrong again.
This congressional election is not only notable because it took place in the most heavily Jewish district in the country, but also because it was the first election since the passage of health care reform. It is clear that Jewish voters remain loyal to Democratic Party ideals. We believe that tonight’s results are a good indicator that strong Democratic candidates will fare quite well in the 2010 mid-term elections.
