Issue | Mike DeWine (R) | Sherrod Brown (D) |
Israel | Supports Israel: co-sponsored legislation to ensure that American funds do not go to any entity run by Hamas. (S.2370) | Supports Israel: co-sponsored legislation to ensure that American funds do not go to any entity run by Hamas. (H.R.4681) |
Iran | 3 times Frank Lautenberg has sought to close the loopholes that allow American corporations to make huge profits working with the very same Iranian oil industry that funds terrorists killing innocent Israelis and Americans. Three times, Mike DeWine stood by Iran, Halliburton, and Dick Cheney, rather than Israel and the American people. (7/26/2005 S.AMDT.1351 to S.1042; 9/30/2004 S.AMDT.3802 to S.2845; 5/19/2004 S.AMDT.3151 to S.2400) | Seeks increased American focus on Iran - a greater danger than Iraq - and more American leadership on this great danger (Cleveland Jewish News, May 15, 2006). Called on US to "stand firmly against" Iran's Presidents' desire see Israel "wiped off the map". |
The Radical Right | In 2004, Mike DeWine recieved a 100% rating from the far-right Christian Coalition, which favors teaching creationism in public schools instead of evolution (Christian Coalition 2004 Congressional and Senate Scorecards). | Brown received the following rankings from the Christian Coalition: 23% in 2004, 0% (!) in 2002, 0% (!) in 2000, 13% in 1998, and 21% in 1996 (National Journal of American Politics (1996-2004)). |
Stem Cell Research | From DeWine's website: "Senator DeWine opposes embryonic stem cell research, as well as the purposeful destruction of embryonic stem cells in the name of 'science.' Senator DeWine will oppose any bill that would expand existing policy by allowing the government to pay for studies on embryos in frozen storage at fertility clinics, even if the couples who conceive them certify that they would otherwise discard them. Senator DeWine strongly opposes the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2005, which passed the House by a vote of 238-194." | Brown was an original co-sponsor of the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act, H.R.810, that recently passed the Senate but was vetoed by President Bush. The Forward (2/17/06) says, "Like most Democrats, almost all mainstream Jewish organizations strongly support stem-cell research, which promises cures for many deadly degenerative diseases. All Jewish religious streams, including the Orthodox, hold that the cells have no special status outside the womb and so they can and should be used for such research. Israeli research arms, including Jerusalem's Hadassah Medical Center and Haifa's Rambam Medical Center, have emerged as world leaders in stem-cell research; Hadassah, the largest American Jewish organization, advocates for the research on Capitol Hill and in statehouses across the country." |
Reproductive Freedom | Since 1997, DeWine has voted with the ultra-conservative National Right to Life Committee every time. | Brown received a 100% rating in 2005 from NARAL Pro-Choice America and a 0% rating from the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC and NARAL Pro-Choice America’s 2005 Congressional Record on Choice). |
Seniors' Issues | The non-partisan Alliance for Retired Americans gives DeWine a 10% lifetime record of voting with America's seniors on pivotal issues like Medicare and Social Security.
