Mayor Barton of Çatalhöyük Asks: How Did the Oil Get to Alaska?

Representative Joe Barton (R-TX) asked Energy Secretary Steven Chu, a Nobel laureate, how oil got to Alaska. As a reminder, Barton is the ranking member on the Energy and Commerce Committee. It seemed like Barton was trying to stump Chu with a gotcha question, but instead the congressman from Texas looked like he was mayor of Çatalhöyük.

If I were a Republican I would be embarrassed. Is this the new/old GOP? How are they ever going to take back congress with members who ask questions like this?

The title of this clip is itself puzzling. Secretary Chu’s answer was not puzzling. The puzzle is why Representative Barton did not understand Chu’s reference to the movement of tectonic plates.
