Obama Administration Imposes New Sanctions against Iranian Regime for Human Rights Violations

The United States targeted Iranian agencies for their human rights violations in the most recent round of sanctions against the regime. The sanctions are focused on the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the Basij Resistance Force, the national police and its chief, Ismail Ahmadi Moghadam. All assets in the United States are frozen, and US businesses are barred from any transaction with them. As VOA News reported:

‘It also sends a clear message that we won’t abide by Iran’s continued human rights abuses. As I said, we have seen since the June 2009 disputed presidential elections a consistent pattern of human rights abuses going after activists, political parties,’ Toner said. ‘And today’s efforts, which are part of an exhaustive process, as you know, that the Treasury Department undertakes, are an effort to call international attention to those people, and that is one element of it.’

The sanctions send a clear message to the Iranian regime that such human rights abuses will not be tolerated. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton released a statement emphatically supporting the sanctions:

The United States stands with all Iranians who wish for a government that respects their human rights, their dignity and their freedom, and we call on the Iranian government to end its systematic human rights abuses and political hypocrisy. Today’s sanctions reflect our commitment to hold accountable those governments and officials that violate human rights and deprive their citizens of the opportunities and future they deserve.
