Will 10,000 Voters Make the Difference in NY-26?

The NJDC announced plans today to reach out to the nearly 10,000 Jewish voters in New York’s 26th Congressional District in time for next Thursday’s special election. The delivered message will warn the constituents of the disastrous cuts to Medicare and Medicaid proposed by Representative Paul Ryan (R-WI).

NJDC President and CEO David A. Harris said:

‘Jewish voters in New   York’s 26th Congressional District have a serious and stark choice to make. Are they going to support disastrous policies like decimating Medicare and Medicaid next Tuesday? The NJDC is committed to encouraging all Jewish voters to show up to the polls so they can send their message loud and clear: it is NOT ok to endanger our seniors so the richest among us can keep their tax cuts.’

Politico‘s David Cantanese reported on this initiative:

With the water only getting warmer in New York’s 26th Congressional District, the National Jewish Democratic Council becomes the latest interest group to enter the foray.

The group is launching calls to 10,000 mostly Democratic Jewish voters beginning Thursday and continuing through next Tuesday’s special election.

Their message dovetails with the same theme being emphasized by other Democrats: The GOP is threatening to gut Medicare.

And:

More data provided by the Council on Jewish voters in the district.  According to the North American Jewish Data Bank, there are 17,082 Jews living in NY-26. Of those, 9,696 (or 56 percent) are self-identified Democrats.

That makes it the 108th most Jewish House district in the country.

‘This underscores the stakes in NY-26, the fact that we’d go this far off our target list to participate in this special is an indication of how close this election could be,’ said the Council’s Brad Bauman.

Below is a copy of the script to hit Jewish households today:

‘Republicans in Congress are trying to make deep cuts and extreme changes to Medicare programs that Jewish seniors like my grandma rely upon every single day. Tuesday, you have a chance to send them a message that their political games in Washington should not threaten our seniors. The entire country is watching. This coming Tuesday, May 24, don’t forget to vote in the special election for Congress and tell Republicans it is NOT ok to play games with our medical care.

This message was paid for by the National Jewish Democratic Council and was not authorized by any candidate or party committee.’
