NJDC Praises Obama’s Cairo Speech for Reaching Out to Secure Middle East Peace

Today, Ira N. Forman, CEO of the National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC), released the following statement:

President Barack Obama’s speech this morning in Cairo did not just reiterate what the audience wanted to hear. Instead, Obama was forthright about the necessity for acceptance of the Jewish homeland in Israel and called for Palestinian abandonment of violence.

We praise Obama for reaching out to the Muslim world and for his commitment to Middle East peace. Similarly, we recognize his wisdom in speaking directly to the Muslim world about the need to abandon fantasies of destroying Israel and in reiterating America’s unbreakable bond with the Jewish State.

I do agree that Israel should abide by the agreements it has made. But I was troubled by Obama’s reference to the Palestinians being “occupied” and by his reference to the Arab lands as “Palestine”  Maybe I am wrong. But I thought it was Palestine that was originally partitioned to be divided between the Jews and the Arabs. As for the so-called “occupied ” territory, since the Arab countries threatened Israel, it had no choice but to expand its borders in the wars that were fought so as to provide additional protection.  Therefore, are these areas not now part of Israel?  If so, how can they be occupied territory?
