U.S. Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro toured sites in southern Israel that were hit during rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip over the last week. The attacks have caused damage and injuries in Israel’s southern region, including the city of Ashdod. Thankfully, the Iron Dome missile system has mitigated the damage by intercepting most of the rockets launched by Hamas.

Shapiro traveled to Ashdod to witness first-hand the destruction caused by the rockets and to visit the injured. According to the Israeli newspaper Ladaat [translation by NJDC]:

The Ambassador didn’t stop [on his tour of the sites], and requested to visit the injured in the Kaplan Hospital. The families and city leaders expressed their great appreciation to Ambassador Shapiro for his dedicated time and he went to meet with the public in Ashdod that was badly injured from the last barrage.

Israel’s Channel 10 recorded a statement from Shapiro during his visit to the hospital on August 23rd:

The message for Hamas is that terrorism of all kinds is completely unacceptable, by all civilized people. There is no excuse, there is no words of explanation for attacks against civilians like we saw on the road to Eilat, or like we saw in the missile attacks that wounded the people here in this hospital. We will reject it and we will never accept that kind of behavior. Israel has a right to defend itself against those kinds of attacks. Israel has suffered far too long from them. So we will continue requests from Israel with other governments of other countries in the region and beyond to try to bring an end to these kinds of attacks.
