U.S. Statement on Boycott of Ahmadinejad U.N. Address

Erin Pelton, spokeswoman for the U.S. Mission to the United Nations, released a statement regarding the U.S. delegation’s boycott of Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s address before the United Nations General Assembly. In the statement, Pelton said that Ahmadinejad used his U.N. visit to “spout paranoid theories and repulsive slurs against Israel.” Further, the speech took place on Yom Kippur, which Pelton called “particularly unfortunate” and cited it as one of the reasons the U.S. made the decision to boycott the speech.

Over the past couple of days, we’ve seen Mr. Ahmadinejad once again use his trip to the UN not to address the legitimate aspirations of the Iranian people but to instead spout paranoid theories and repulsive slurs against Israel. It’s particularly unfortunate that Mr. Ahmadinejad will have the platform of the UN General Assembly on Yom Kippur, which is why the United States has decided not to attend.
