Exec. Director Keyak Responds to WSJ Rand Profile

Dear Editor,

The recent profile of Senator Rand Paul (Rand Paul Tries to Transform a Moment Into a Movement, April 22) chronicles the Senator’s move into the national spotlight as a Republican leader. While the article focuses on his rising political stock, it ignores his remarkably dismal record concerning America’s most important ally in the Middle East. Senator Paul is quite possibly the most naïve member of the Senate when it comes to the Jewish state of Israel.

Senator Paul has a consistently called for cuts to Israel’s military aid, which he did in January, February, and September of 2011—and then again in January of this year. He is also the only Senator who continually refuses to rule out a containment strategy for Iran and was the sole “no” vote on a Senate resolution ruling out containing a nuclear armed Iran.

On some of the most pressing international issues of our time, Senator Paul is far out of step with the bipartisan consensus in the pro-Israel community and the entire U.S. Congress. As Senator Paul continues to bask in the limelight and enjoy his powerful seat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, he and his Republican supporters must address these deeply troubling positions.
