A Cleaner and Greener American

Last Friday, the House of Representatives has passed the American Clean Energy and Security Act (ACES), which will not only lessen our dependence on foreign oil, but will create a clean energy transformation in our economy that will create millions of new jobs in the U.S.

This legislation now moves to the Senate.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) noted in the Congressional Record, “we have an opportunity to lead America toward an effective and affordable transition to a clean energy future. It is a moment we cannot afford to miss. We have a responsibility to create jobs and make America more secure, protect the health of our citizens, and honor our moral responsibility to our children and our future generations.”

Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) , has been extremely critical of the bill and has referred to the bill in not-so-nice terms. Boehner attempted to delay the bill by using his leadership role as a way to obtain an unlimited amount of time to make suggestions.

Nobel Prize-winning economist and New York Times columnist, Paul Krugman, is a supporter of the bill and considers the Representatives who voted against the bill guilty of “treason against the planet.”

Krugman goes on to write:

Temperature increases on the scale predicted by the M.I.T. researchers and others would create huge disruptions in our lives and our economy. As a recent authoritative U.S. government report points out, by the end of this century New Hampshire may well have the climate of North Carolina today, Illinois may have the climate of East Texas, and across the country extreme, deadly heat waves — the kind that traditionally occur only once in a generation — may become annual or biannual events. In other words, we’re facing a clear and present danger to our way of life, perhaps even to civilization itself. How can anyone justify failing to act?
