The White House announced that Vice President Joseph Biden will visit Israel as part of his trip to the Middle East. During his trip, Biden will meet with “key leaders in Israel, the Palestinian Authority, Egypt, and Jordan” and “during the trip, the Vice President will discuss the full range of bilateral and regional issues.”

According to Israel’s Yediot Ahronot, “[Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu said he would be very pleased to host Biden in Jerusalem, a true friend of Israel and of the peace process whom he has known for many years.”

Biden visiting Israel is akin to a blind, deaf and dumb man trying to cross Madison Avenue at 4:00pm on Friday with his hands cuffed behind him and his shoes untied.  The potential damage—to Madison Avenue—is immeasurable.  Someone ought to remind Joe that Jerusalem’s eastern settlements are still west of the Jordan.

We would hope that recognition of Israel’s minority status in a region of militant opposition requires Israel’s secure boarders.  A democratic and reliable friend of the U.S. deserves to maintain its centrally located undivided capital of Jerusalem as recognized with a U.S. embassy as promissed. Giving up land has yet to provide Israel with the peace it deserves. The U.S. must assist Israel in maintaining its military superiority in the region to ensure Israel’s and U.S. welfare.
