This week, the National Jewish Democratic Council called upon House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and Republican Ohio Senate candidate State Treasurer Josh Mandel to return the campaign contributions they received from Nazi reenactor and former Republican House candidate Rich Iott. NJDC’s calls received Ohio-based and national media attention, making it apparent that this issue must be addressed by Boehner and Mandel. Some of the stories included:

The National Jewish Democratic Council, a left-leaning group, said Boehner has a “responsibility to repudiate Iott’s behavior by returning the money or, better yet, donating it to a Holocaust charity.”

“Boehner-the most powerful Republican in America and the third person in the presidential succession line-owes American Jews and WWII veterans an explanation as to how he can continue to associate himself with Iott, given his widely-known disturbing behavior,” said NJDC President and CEO David A. Harris.

The NJDC said they purposefully waited months before calling out Mandel to give him a chance to “act responsibly.” House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA), who is also Jewish, rebuked Iott’s behavior last year. He and Boehner - and apparently Mandel - “parted ways” when it came to dealing with the Nazi reenacter, Politico reported at the time.
