Former United Nations Ambassador John Bolton—one of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s top foreign policy surrogates—wrongfully and deliberately smeared President Barack Obama’s Israel record during an interview with WABC’s Aaron Klein. Bolton said:
I think Gov. Romney is committed to the security of Israel in ways that are really very consistent with what used to be the broad, bipartisan tradition in American politics, a tradition that has not been followed by the Obama administration…
Bolton’s statement is patently false. President Barack Obama has delivered more security assistance to Israel than any of his predecessors and has been Israel’s prime advocate in the diplomatic arena. Among his many pro-Israel accomplishments, Obama restored Israel’s Qualitative Military Edge (QME)—which Bolton’s former boss President George W. Bush allowed to lapse—and sold Israel the bunker busting bombs that Bush repeatedly refused to sell.
Instead of smearing the President, Bolton should be explaining how his candidate would “do the opposite” when it comes to Israel.
Unfortunately though, smears about the President’s strong Israel record are nothing new from Bolton. In particular, Bolton was a leading proponent of the false story spread by former Yassar Arafat adviser and “veteran anti-Israel warrior” Mark Perry regarding Israel and Azerbaijan.
