NJDC Welcomes Defeat of Senate Amendment Restricting Abortion Coverage

David A. Harris, President of the National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC), released the following statement:

The National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC) welcomes the defeat of Senator Ben Nelson’s (D-NE) amendment that would have dramatically set back the cause of reproductive rights.

The sort of restrictions supported by this amendment unfortunately remind us of a darker time in the history of our nation’s reproductive rights movement. We are proud to live in a county where women have access to reproductive health services, and that access should be expanded—not diminished.

NJDC urges the Senate to rise to the opportunity this legislation presents and pass this historic reform—without making political compromises that greatly limit the rights of more than half of Americans.

The inequity and injustice of our system leads us in the Jewish community to believe that we have a moral imperative to pass health insurance reform in a fast and responsible way.  NJDC supports this much-needed reform, and we believe that now the prospect for real progress has never looked better.

I love the use of the euphemism “reproductive rights”.  Why not just call it what it is——Abortion.
