This week, Governor Jack Markell of Delaware travelled to Israel. As part of the four-day trip, Governor Markell sought to promote Delaware as the “place of choice” for Israeli businesses to incorporate in the United States. Markell said::
“One of the things we know is that Israeli businesses are looking for people to facilitate partnerships with early adopters and with the work force, and this is something that we are especially well suited to do,” Markell said, adding that thousands of Israeli companies have already incorporated in Delaware due to its sophisticated corporate governance structure and proximity to New York City and Washington, D.C.
This was Governor Markell’s ninth trip to Israel, and his first as Governor. He is only sitting Jewish Governor, and his Lieutenant Governor, Matt Denn, is also Jewish. During Markell’s visit he expressed his admiration of Israel::
“The amazing thing about Israel is the progress that it has made in the face of so many challenges,” said Markell, who first visited as a 6-year-old boy shortly after the conclusion of the Six Day War and has many relatives in the country. “There’s a can-do spirit, which in the end is as important as having a very capable, highly-educated workforce.”

During the visit, Governor Markell also met with Israeli President Shimon Peres:
President Peres began by welcoming Governor Markell and said, “Welcome to Israel, the relations between Israel and Delaware are indeed very special. Delaware is a wonderful place and I look forward to finding ways to further strengthen and enhance the cooperation between Israel and Delaware.”
Governor Markell thanked President Peres for his warm words and said, “We really appreciate the chance to see you. We have between Delaware and Israel a very strong history, especially in the area of corporate governance. We have a lot of collaboration between Delaware companies and universities and their counterparts in Israel, and this trip is to enhance that collaboration.”
