Democrats On Top of Iran Sanctions

Over the last few weeks, Iran’s nuclear program has been increasingly in the news and on the radar of many Congressional Democrats who are seeking to impose tougher sanctions in order to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. Notable remarks and actions include:

• Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) introducing a new round of sanctions legislation in the Senate
• House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) called for using ”[using] the tools at our disposal—from diplomacy to sanctions—to stop Iran’s march toward nuclear capability.”
• House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Howard Berman (D-CA) supporting Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s call for “crippling sanctions” 
• Representative Robert Wexler (D-FL) and Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD) both spoke out strongly in favor of sanctions
• House Armed Services Committee Ike Skelton (D-MO) emphasized that Iran must come clean with its program or face sanctions
• Senate Near East Subcommittee Chairman Bob Casey (D-PA) plainly stated: “Iran will only cease its illicit nuclear program, end its support for terrorists in Hamas and Hezbollah and stop arming militant groups in Iraq when it is compelled to pay an economic price”
• Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) referred to sanctions as “a must”
• Senate Majority Whip Richard Durbin (D-IL) believes that ”[Iran is the greatest] threat to the Middle East and Europe, and of the world.”

 

And—note to critics—it’s not just President Barack Obama, other world leaders, and the IAEA who are supportive of sanctions against Iran: Israel also supports them! But for some reason, the right wing hatchet brigade does not care. They just want to criticize Obama and Democrats before high level negotiations with Iran have enough time to produce results. What will it take for them to realize that Obama and Democrats are acting in both America and Israel’s interest? And that they have Israel’s support?
