President Barack Obama’s selection to be the next Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, current Army Chief of Staff General Martin Dempsey, has a strong record of close cooperation with the Israeli military.

As head of the Army Training and Doctrine Command, or TRADOC, Dempsey studied Israeli military tactics to support his goal of creating a more versatile and adaptable American army. During the past two decades, Dempsey has used his leadership roles for various initiatives in the Middle East to grow the already strong American-Israeli military relationship by augmenting lines of communication with the IDF.

Obama alluded to Dempsey’s strong relationship with Israel - America’s key ally in the Middle East - when he said that Dempsey has “the respect and the trust of our troops on the front lines, our friends in Congress, and allies and partners abroad,” and “my full confidence.”

Dempsey’s appointment is the latest demonstration of Obama’s commitment to Israel’s security and the strengthening of the two countries’ strategic cooperation.
