We all know that a “Newtown” can happen anytime and anywhere. This week, Congress has an opportunity to do something about reducing gun violence. Two bills addressing gun control very well could come to the Senate Floor today.
The first piece of legislation is NJDC Women’s Leadership Network Honorary Co-Chair Senator Diane Feinstein’s (D-CA) Assault Weapons Ban of 2013. The second is a bipartisan bill on background checks sponsored by Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Pat Toomey (R-PA). While the fate of each bill is not certain, it is essential that your Senators know where you stand.
Senator Feinstein’s bill seeks to strengthen the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban. The legislation bans the sale, transfer, manufacturing and importation of 157 specially-named semiautomatic firearms and also includes limitations on magazine sizes.
Senators Manchin’s and Toomey’s bipartisan bill expands background checks and takes meaningful steps towards closing loopholes in existing federal gun laws. The legislation closes the “gun show” loophole by requiring an FBI background check for all firearm sales conducted at gun shows. It also requires a criminal background check for all commercial gun transactions, including listings posted in a newspaper or on the Internet.
As the President has said, gun violence has reached “epidemic” proportions in America. By passing comprehensive gun violence measures, we can ensure that countless lives are saved.
Please contact Senators today and urge them to take common sense action and support comprehensive gun violence prevention legislation immediately!
