David Harris, NJDC’s president, wrote about Sarah Palin and “Death Panels” on Politico. ”[T]he ghastly manner in which Sarah Palin has insisted that her son with Down syndrome would “have to stand in front of Obama’s ‘death panel’” to gain health care—facts be damned—will profoundly turn off the clear majority of this country, even if the adamant fringe is roused out of their seats by such rhetoric,” Harris wrote.
An excerpt:
The time for meaningful health insurance reform in America has come. When Americans voted in November, they voted both for policy-based change such as health insurance reform and quality-of-debate change—away from exactly what Sarah Palin is invoking with her wild “death panel” dark fiction. Rhetoric like hers will backfire dramatically, and in her case, it will significantly hurt her politically going forward—even if it buys her added strength in the relatively tiny pockets of staunchly conservative supporters who are already in her camp.

Sarah Palin appeals to an overly Conservative zealot crowd, who like her, have little education and don’t want to clearly listen and make any effort to understand the debates going on in Washington and beyond. She is only interested in pushing her own agenda, whatever that is and it has already backfired, as the people of Alaska have seen her for what she is. She left office under the shadow of extremely expensive ethics charges and will have to continue to fight them for a long time before her name could ever be cleared. It will prove costly to her politically permanently.
Harris has taken Palin’s comment out of context. She was concerned about nationalizing the US health care system and the consequences of “Advance Care Planning Consultation” as stated in Section 1233 of HR 3200, which was dropped by the Senate Finance Committee. Palin won her point on this healthcare reform issue.
Although I am a staunch Obama supporter, I think he should eliminate the professional panels idea because that’s what we have now with private insurers. Medical decisions should be made by doctors, their patients, and second medical opinions (when needed). Sarah Palin is not worth discussing.
I have a son, 30 years of age, with severe autism and epilepsy. I had to cash in an IRA to pay his medical bills due to insurance companies, having their so called “death panels,” refusing to insure him due to preexisting conditions. I had to go into debt in order that he may have care and medications to stop his seizures. Ms. Palin, I hope that you and future parents of special needs children never have to endure what my son and I plus countless other parents had to go through.. God bless President Obama and other members of congress who are real “menches” in finally addressing the issue of health care reform and applicable to all.
I agree with Rosaline…Palin is not worth discussing. I have to say, however, that John McCain is the culprit here…he did nothing to advance any hope for the Republicans (which they dearly need). He will not live this one down. She actually lost his chance to be President (Thank God), considering that she would be the next in line had he gotten ill or died during his term. we really need to give thanks for that…considering her as a President is a “Death Wish.” Thank you.
“Dark fiction,” indeed! But we must be wise and not provide her with additional forums that keep her name on the front burners of the forever fickle news cycles. Mrs. Palin is a pathetic excuse even for an elementary school level comedy routine.
