Have they No Shame #4:  World Jewish Daily’s Irresponsible Coverage

Today’s World Jewish Daily’s headline reads: “Obama Weighs Mideast Overhaul: Jerusalem, Palestinian ‘right of return’ at heart of plan.” Such a headline would lead the reader to believe that a central part of a supposed secret Obama peace plan is accepting a Palestinian right of return to pre-1967 Israel. WJD goes on to “report” that “Obama’s plan draws on controversial themes, including Palestinian refugees’ ‘right of return’, expressed in his speech to the Arab world last year in Cairo.”

What the David Ignatius column (the source of WJD’s breathless headline) actually says is that if the Administration decides on proposing a peace plan (a big if) it “would build upon past progress on such issues as borders, ‘the right of return’ for Palestinian refugees and the status of Jerusalem.” In other words on these issues the plan would rely on solutions agreed to by past Israeli government. Our friends at WJD also have a link to Obama’s Cairo’s speech which they claim talked about “right of return.” Unfortunately for WJD, Obama never even mentioned a Palestinian “right of return” in his Cairo speech. So much for journalistic objectivity.

The “right of return” reference was to the Ignatius column. The syntax was awkward and ambiguous, but Ignatius does refer to the “right of return.”
