Have They No Shame #5: Barbour on McDonnell

As reported by Politico, Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour doesn’t think that Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell needs to apologize for his omission of slavery in a declaration of April as Confederate History Month.

When CNN “State of the Union” anchor Candy Crowley asked Barbour, a onetime lobbyist and former head of the RNC, if the slavery omission was a mistake, he said, “I don’t think so, my legislature has made an active holiday of Confederate Memorial Day… Anyone who thinks that you have to explain that slavery is a bad thing, it goes without saying… It’s sort of feeling that it’s a nit, it’s not significant, it’s trying to make a big deal.”

As a former head of the RNC and a potential presidential candidate, Barbour should be ashamed of himself. His callous remarks prove that he’s out of touch with the American public and not quite ready for prime time. Like McDonnell, Barbour’s assertion is certain to haunt him as he attempts to move forward in this political career and like McDonnell, Barbour owes the American people an apology
