Jewish community leaders and 23 Senators met at the Capitol to discuss issues important to the Jewish community including Israel, the recent election in Iran, and the Supreme Court’s ruling on the 1965 Voting Rights Act.

In a speech several weeks ago to the American Jewish Committee, Secretary Kerry outlined his plan for moving the peace process forward and asked for the support of the Jewish community. At the meeting yesterday American Public Affairs Committee President Michael Kassan, Rabbi Jewish Council on Public Affairs Director Steve Gutow, and Americans for Peace Now President Debra DeLee all endorsed the Secretary Kerry’s plan.

JTA highlighted AIPAC’s support:

Michael Kassen, the president of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, began his talk at the meeting Wednesday with what participants said was a “hearty” endorsement of the efforts by John Kerry, the U.S. Secretary of State, to restart the talks.

Senator Mark Begich (D-Alaska) said of the meeting:

“Today’s candid conversation allowed myself and my colleagues to hear the most pressing concerns of the Jewish community, and determine how we can best help address them,” Begich said in a statement after the meeting.
