NJDC Reacts to Sen. Herb Kohl’s Retirement Announcement

NJDC — May 13, 2011 – 11:51 am | Democrats Comments (1) Add a comment

The National Jewish Democratic Council is saddened by the news that Senator Herb Kohl (D-WI) will be retiring from the Senate. Kohl has been a leader on issues affecting our nation’s children and seniors and has been a strong advocate for Jewish values on the Senate floor. We congratulate him for his distinguished career in public service and wish him well.

Kohl entered the Senate in 1988 and over the course of his career has authored and supported many pieces of legislation that protect our nation’s children. In particular, he led the legislative effort to expand child nutrition programs in America’s public schools. Kohl also devoted much of his time to protecting the rights of seniors and expanding their access to affordable medications and treatments. He chaired the Senate Special Committee on Aging and also served on the Senate Appropriations Committee, Judiciary Committee, and Banking Committee.

In his private life, Kohl is the owner of the Milwaukee Bucks basketball team and a major contributor to charitable causes in Wisconsin and throughout the nation.

More about Kohl can be read here, as part of NJDC’s Trailblazing Jewish Democrats feature for Jewish American Heritage month.
