Last night New Jersey Senator Frank Lautenberg received Hillel’s prestigious Renaissance Award at their annual gala dinner. Senator Lautenberg has a long history of distinguished work on behalf of the Jewish community. Hillel highlighted his work on the Lautenberg Amendment, a law that allowed persecuted Soviet Jews safe passage to the United States, along with his work to make college more affordable. Hillel said this about Senator Lautenberg:

Among his foremost accomplishments, Senator Lautenberg authored the amendment carrying his name, which allowed Jews and other religious minorities from the former Soviet Union to immigrate to the United States. To further honor Senator Lautenberg’s support for Jewish refugees, Hillel will join NCSJ: Advocates on Behalf of Jews in Russia, Ukraine, the Baltic States & Eurasia, in awarding the inaugural Lautenberg Prize to the Genesis Philanthropy Group…

Senator Lautenberg’s career in business and politics includes significant contributions to the Jewish community and Israel. He established the Lautenberg Center for General and Tumor Immunology at The Hebrew University in Israel, a major center for research and instruction on cancer treatments. In addition to serving as Chairman of United Jewish Appeal in the mid-1970s, the Senator served on the board of directors of the American Jewish Committee, the board of governors of Hebrew University, and the executive committee of the Jewish Agency for Israel. He also served on the President’s Commission on the Holocaust.

The Washington Post wrote about the event:

Bonnie Lautenberg, accepted the organization’s Renaissance Award, given each year to someone whose work has impacted Jewish life. She choked up when she took the stage and the crowd rose to its feet.

Frank Lautenberg was honored for contributions including the Lautenberg Amendment, which grants persecuted people refugee status in the United States.

NJDC is very proud that Senator Lautenberg has been honored for his commitment to the Jewish community and tikkun olam.
