Comments Just Latest Attention-Grabbing Remarks from Conservative Radio Host
The National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC) today slammed conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh for his insulting remarks comparing Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton to Hitler’s propaganda efforts during the Holocaust. NJDC President and CEO David A. Harris said:
“Once again, a prominent voice in the Republican Party has disrespectfully and insultingly invoked the Holocaust to denigrate both a sitting and a former president. Rush Limbaugh’s comments today on his radio show equating Presidents Obama and Clinton with Hitler’s use of propaganda are simply unacceptable, especially given Limbaugh’s past usage of offensive Holocaust rhetoric. Limbaugh owes the Jewish community an apology at once, and we hope that Republican leaders—including the party’s presumptive presidential ticket in Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan—will stand up and condemn these outrageous remarks.”
Limbaugh’s comments mirror the words and actions of a number of Republicans who have shamefully abused the Holocaust to make political points, including presidential candidate and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Governor Rick Scott (R-FL), Governor Paul LePage (R-ME), Senator Rand Paul (R-KY), Representatives Allen West (R-FL), Michele Bachmann (R-MN), and Trent Franks (R-AZ), WV Senate candidate John Raese, FL House candidate Adam Hasner, and OH House candidates Samuel “Joe the Plumber” Wurzelbacher and Marisha Agana—among others.
Media Matters for America transcribed Limbaugh’s comments:
LIMBAUGH: Propaganda versus truth—which wins? Well, what did—what was Hitler more concerned with? Propaganda. Did Hitler succeed for a time? Yeah, he did. What was Clinton more concerned with—truth or propaganda? What’s Obama more concerned with—truth or propaganda? Who would you say is winning? Is propaganda winning or truth winning? We, the virtuous ones in our society—we think truth wins. We have this investment in the truth. We think it’s holy. We think that it is profound, and we think it’s persuasive.
I play you three minutes of Wolf Blitzer cleaning Debbie’s clock and I get an email, ‘No, no, Rush, she—Ryan shreds Medicare was said I don’t know how many times.’
That’s what people are going to hear, because the fear will always trump the good. Because people react to fear.
