Admiral Michael Mullen, the outgoing Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, made a surprise visit to Israel on July 18th as his chairmanship draws to a close. This marks his sixth visit to Israel as Chairman since 2007. Mullen attended a farewell dinner in his honor, hosted by Israeli Defense Force Chief of General Staff Lieutenant General Benny Gantz. Senior IDF commanders attended the dinner to “convey their utmost appreciation and respect” for him. Mullen is widely respected for his “strong personal ties with his Israeli counterparts” and his contributions “to strengthening the steadfast relationship between the IDF and US military.”
